From Tech Overlords to Policy Potholes: Florida’s AI Adventure

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis has declared artificial intelligence a lurking menace—and promised that Florida will conquer it…eventually.

After vetoing HB 827, a bipartisan bill to study AI’s impact on the workforce, DeSantis announced the Sunshine State will instead craft its own “coherent approach” to keep the “tech overlords” at bay.

The Great AI Veto

In April, the Legislature passed HB 827 with a near‑unanimous vote.

The measure tasked the Department of Commerce with analyzing job losses and gains tied to automation and AI, complete with a study of emerging workforce needs.

DeSantis’s veto letter was unceremonious:

“Such a report…would likely be obsolete by the time it was actually published.”

Essentially, by the time Florida learned how AI was reshaping jobs, the robots will have already written the next software patch.

“Tech Overlords” vs. Human Experience

Speaking in Jacksonville, the governor warned of AI’s darker side:

“It’s one thing to use technology to enhance the human experience, but it’s another to have technology supplant the human experience…We can’t just turn the reins over to a bunch of tech overlords.”

Cue visions of skylines ruled by algorithmic overlords demanding your latte preferences in binary.

Florida’s Path Forward

Instead of waiting for dusty reports, DeSantis insists Florida will “develop a plan to prevent AI from taking over.” Details remain as murky as a Florida sunset through hurricane clouds.

Critics ask: when? How comprehensive?

And will it arrive before your smart fridge starts charging you late fees?!

A National Patchwork or a Homegrown Blueprint?

DeSantis has also criticized a failed congressional proposal that would have blocked states from crafting AI rules.

He argues a “50‑state patchwork” of regulations would be chaos incarnate.

Florida, he suggests, should write its own script—an approach that could be considered reminiscent of building a sandcastle at high tide.

Meanwhile, the ALFA Institute, chaired by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, cautions that delaying federal AI rules risks fragmentation. As they put it:

“Sidelining AI regulation opens the door for a fractured landscape that undermines any national strategy.”

Beyond Vetoes: Florida’s Legislative Sprint

In the same legislative flurry, DeSantis allowed three bills to become law without his signature—an unusual move last seen in 2012.

They cover state employee health benefits, non‑compete agreements, and a Sarasota County compensation directive.

So while AI grabs headlines, other policy-making dramas chug along in Tallahassee’s wings.

What Comes Next?

The public is left waiting for Florida’s AI playbook.

Will it be a blockbuster hit or a cautionary straight‑to‑DVD release?

Tech companies, civic groups, and everyday Floridians all want clarity—and fast.

After all, with AI chatbots already drafting the next great novel (or at least your grocery list), the clock is ticking!

For now, Floridians can at least take comfort in knowing their governor is vigilantly protecting their jobs from digital usurpers.

Just don’t ask when the plan will drop; the answer remains in stealth mode.

Because in Florida politics, as in AI, no single solution ever comes fully debugged!

Please Help Find These Forgotten Girls Held at Male Juvenile Prison for Over a Year!

MY MOST IMPORTANT STORY  Dozens of Forgotten Little Girls Held at Male Juvenile Prison for Over a Year! Welcome to the Sunshine State , where the palm trees sway, the alligators lurk, and the legislative process makes Kafka look like a life coach!  Florida House Bill HB21 . Not just a compensation bill but possibly a 20 million dollar "Stay out of Jail Free" card for some folks. This is a bill that does some good—but also trips over its own shoelaces, falls down a staircase, and lands on a historical oversight so big, it might as well have its own zip code! An oversight that overlooks what I consider to be its most vulnerable victims! The Setup: Justice with a Catch HB21 was enacted on July 1, 2024 to compensate victims of abuse from two male juvenile detention facilities located in Florida, Dozier and Okeechobee.  It says, “Hey, survivors of abuse between 1940 and 1975, here’s some compensation for the horrific things you endured!” Sounds good, right? Postal Police Stuck Behind ‘Keep Out’ Signs While Mailmen Face Muggers: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!!

As crime against letter carriers surges, one would think that America’s armed, uniformed Postal Police might be hitting the streets to protect our mail.  Instead, they’re still glued to their post office entrances like sentries guarding Fort Frownmore.  Why?  Because since 2020, the Postmaster General decreed they must “protect postal property” only—meaning, they currently serve as glorified lobby bouncers rather than actual roaming guardians of the mailstream. “ They’re robbing letter carriers, they’re sticking a gun in a letter carrier’s face and they’re demanding arrow keys, ” laments Frank Albergo , president of the National Postal Police Union and a Postal Police Officer himself.  An "arrow key" in the context of the Post Office is a specialized, universal key that postal workers use to access various locked mail receptacles, including collection boxes, apartment mailboxes, and cluster boxes. Albergo isn’t exaggerating—research shows over 100 physical assaul...
