Florida DCF Axes 400+ Mental Health Jobs, Because Who Needs Sanity Anyway?

In a move that’s left therapists reaching for their stress balls and Floridians reaching for the nearest snack cake, state lawmakers have approved a plan to chop over 400 positions from the Department of Children and Families (DCF)—and yes, most of them are in mental health.

After all, what’s more Floridian than sun, sand…and sudden, inexplicable budget cruelty?

Licensed mental health therapist Cherlette McCullough summed up the collective disbelief:

“Just gut-wrenching—like, Oh, my God.”

Gut-wrenching indeed, Cherlette, especially when your gut knows it’s about to get a lot more twisting.

The Numbers That Count

Here’s the breakdown: 89 vacant positions—presumably those that were already deserted for less traumatic work, like juggling flaming swords—plus 365 full-time equivalent posts currently filled by real live humans tasked with…you know, helping people stay sane.

That’s 454 jobs in total, destined to become a footnote in Florida’s budget “savings” plan.

“Mental Health? That’s So Yesterday”

McCullough didn’t mince words:

“That sends a clear message in Florida that mental health is not a priority.”

And who needs priority when you’ve got hurricanes to worry about?

Or the ever-present menace of alligator selfies?

Surely sanity can wait its turn.

False Economy: Savings Today, Chaos Tomorrow

Cutting these positions supposedly saves the state $22 million.

But here’s the kicker: McCullough warns those savings will “come right back out in hospitalization services for juvenile care and foster care services. Those are our most vulnerable populations here in Florida, and some…really need the help around mental health services. Yeah, I can see this just being a disaster.”

In other words, Florida’s leaders have embraced the classic budget trope: save a buck now, pay two bucks later—plus interest, plus penalties, and probably a side of litigation.

DCF’s Spin: Contract Out the Care

A DCF spokesperson told WESH 2 News of Winter Park Florida the following: “The majority of the 455 positions you reference were eliminated in order to transfer the associated funding from the salaries and benefits category to contracted services.”

Translation: “We’re firing employees so we can hire private companies at higher rates, but hey, it’s ‘efficient.’”

Because nothing says “efficiency” like raising costs and reducing accountability.

Sunshine State of Mind—Or Not

Florida’s DCF oversees mental health and substance abuse treatment statewide.

It’s a system meant to catch those who might otherwise fall through the cracks—cracks that are about to get a lot wider.

As services shrink, nonprofit organizations will be the new lifeguards on duty, only they’re lifeguards without lifeguard stands, flotation devices, or much of a budget.

What Happens Next?

Expect surges in emergency room admissions, longer waits for counseling, and a general sense of “Wait, did they really just do that?” among social workers and families alike.

For those keeping score at home, here’s the play-by-play:

  1. Budget cuts slash mental health staff.

  2. Service gaps widen; crises go unaddressed.

  3. ER visits & foster admissions skyrocket.

  4. Costly crises drain local hospital budgets.

  5. Lawmakers scratch heads, wonder where all the money went.

Rinse and repeat, with extra despair.

The Silver Lining?

If you’re one of the lucky few still employed in Florida mental health care, you might soon become an Instagram influencer—“Here’s my daily meltdown on how we survived our own state budget!”

If you’re a nonprofit, stock up on prayer candles and “we’re overwhelmed but still here” T-shirts.

Final Thoughts

Floridians may dodge red lights, but now they can’t dodge reality: mental health isn’t optional.

And if you think this cuts too close to the bone, remember: in budget-land, bones are just another line item waiting to be trimmed.

Postal Police Stuck Behind ‘Keep Out’ Signs While Mailmen Face Muggers: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!!

As crime against letter carriers surges, one would think that America’s armed, uniformed Postal Police might be hitting the streets to protect our mail.  Instead, they’re still glued to their post office entrances like sentries guarding Fort Frownmore.  Why?  Because since 2020, the Postmaster General decreed they must “protect postal property” only—meaning, they currently serve as glorified lobby bouncers rather than actual roaming guardians of the mailstream. “ They’re robbing letter carriers, they’re sticking a gun in a letter carrier’s face and they’re demanding arrow keys, ” laments Frank Albergo , president of the National Postal Police Union and a Postal Police Officer himself.  An "arrow key" in the context of the Post Office is a specialized, universal key that postal workers use to access various locked mail receptacles, including collection boxes, apartment mailboxes, and cluster boxes. Albergo isn’t exaggerating—research shows over 100 physical assaul...

Please Help Find These Forgotten Girls Held at Male Juvenile Prison for Over a Year!

MY MOST IMPORTANT STORY  Dozens of Forgotten Little Girls Held at Male Juvenile Prison for Over a Year! Welcome to the Sunshine State , where the palm trees sway, the alligators lurk, and the legislative process makes Kafka look like a life coach!  Florida House Bill HB21 . Not just a compensation bill but possibly a 20 million dollar "Stay out of Jail Free" card for some folks. This is a bill that does some good—but also trips over its own shoelaces, falls down a staircase, and lands on a historical oversight so big, it might as well have its own zip code! An oversight that overlooks what I consider to be its most vulnerable victims! The Setup: Justice with a Catch HB21 was enacted on July 1, 2024 to compensate victims of abuse from two male juvenile detention facilities located in Florida, Dozier and Okeechobee.  It says, “Hey, survivors of abuse between 1940 and 1975, here’s some compensation for the horrific things you endured!” Sounds good, right?
